Microwave your toothbrush?

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

I read an article the other day that says we should all microwave our toothbrushes.

I know, it sounds weird, but not really when you think about it.  According to Fitsugar.com you should get a new toothbrush every six months, but you really should be changing your toothbrush more often, like every three to four months.  When the bristles get worn and lose their rigidity, they don’t remove plaque as well. But what about in between?  Well they say that you should also do some maintenance within that three month period. Hey your toothbrush is just sitting out in the open or in your medicine cabinet and there are a lot of germs and bacteria floating around ready to attach themselves to your brush, so to prevent colds, flu, and other sicknesses, once or twice a week run your toothbrush through the microwave.  Yeah the microwave. Just pop it in on high for ten seconds immediately before brushing your teeth. They say that if someone in your home is sick, you may want to sterilize it in the microwave each time you brush. If you’re the one who’s sick, after the illness passes, throw away your old toothbrush and get a new one, you’ll be healthier for it.  Now go brush your teeth!

Congratulations!! It’s a Boy!!

All of us in Columbus are so proud of our world class Columbus Zoo.

When I heard of the new arrival last Friday I had a real sense of pride.

Phoebe, the 21 year old Asian elephant had delivered a male calf at 2:35pm after a 655 day gestation period.(Yes ladies be glad you are not an elephant!!)

Mother and baby are both doing well.

This is so exciting to not only Columbus and our zoo but all of the animal world as Elephants are an endangered species.

Zoo visitors are not allowed to see the new arrival and mom just yet. They are giving them time to form a strong bond. The zoo will announce viewing information soon when it becomes available.

You can get updates on Phoebe and her calf at the zoo website.

Billy vs. Elton?

Thursday, March 19th, 2009

They both are fantastic musicians and performers, but Billy Joel and Elton John are totally different in their appraoach to stardom..They will be here in Columbus in July, and according to Billy Joel just seeing their respective dressing rooms show the different style of each of them….

Billy and Elton’s dressing room differences…

Billy Joel insists his backstage dressing room is like a different world compared to touring partner Elton John’s colorful space. The pair has hit the road again on the Face2Face tour and Joel insists the fact that both He and Elton play piano is one of the only things that make them alike. He claims their differences are clear in their dressing rooms.  Joel tells Rolling Stone magazine, “Mine is like the back of a deli. Give me some water, a couple of sodas and a cold-cut (meat) platter, and I’m good.”  “Elton’s looks like the glory that was

Rome. He has flowers, and the room is draped with all kinds of materials. There are boys in togas, like centurions. And he’s got dozens of pairs of shoes and beautiful jackets and sunglasses.”

Spring and Summer driving safety

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

We have all been waiting for the great weather we have seen this week. BUT we all need to slow down and review our driving skills.

With the warm weather we have more people walking and riding bikes and of course motorcycles.

Being a motorcycle rider myself I am very sensitive to road safety when riding.

Last evening when I left the station I came upon a terrible accident near the station. It looked like the entire city force of police and rescue vehicles were on the scene.

I later found out that it involved a motorcycle and an automobile. It also as I found out claimed the life of the motorcyclist.

It got me to thinking how we all need to slow down and watch closely for others who may not be as attentive as they should be.

Youngsters on bicycles do not always think of vehicles on the roads as they are out enjoying the outdoors.

As parents this is a good time to review the safety rules for our young travelers as they are out.

And as drivers or riders it’s a good time to fefresh ourselves with being more aware of our surroundings.

If we can avoid the ugly scene I passed last night that will be a major success.

Have fun..but be alert and aware.

St. Patrick’s day recipe!!

Tuesday, March 17th, 2009

With a name like Steve Kelly, you know I am celebrating today!!

Here is a great Irish recipe you can serve up to the family this evening!!

This is always a favorite in the Kelly household…Enjoy!! And Happy St. Patricks day!

Colcannon

Colcannon

Ingredients

  • 3 pounds potatoes, scrubbed
  • 2 sticks butter
  • 1 1/4 cups hot milk
  • Freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 head cabbage, cored and finely shredded
  • 1 (1-pound) piece ham or bacon, cooked the day before
  • 4 scallions, finely chopped
  • Chopped parsley leaves, for garnish

Directions

Steam the potatoes in their skins for 30 minutes. Peel them using a knife and fork. Chop with a knife before mashing. Mash thoroughly to remove all the lumps. Add 1 stick of butter in pieces. Gradually add hot milk, stirring all the time. Season with a few grinds of black pepper.

Boil the cabbage in unsalted water until it turns a darker color. Add 2 tablespoons butter to tenderize it. Cover with lid for 2 minutes. Drain thoroughly before returning it to the pan. Chop into small pieces.

Put the ham in a large saucepan and cover with water. Bring to the boil and simmer for 45 minutes until tender. Drain. Remove any fat and chop into small pieces.

Add cabbage, scallions, and ham to mashed potatoes, stirring them in gently.

Serve in individual soup plates. Make an indentation on the top by swirling a wooden spoon. Put 1 tablespoon of butter into each indentation. Sprinkle with parsley.
Enjoy!!

I stumbled onto this interesting survey…Looks like the ladies win hands down on the highways..

How Do Men Compare to Women as Drivers?

Here are some results from a recent insurance study:

  • 47% of men have rudely gestured at other drivers, compared to 38% of women
  • 46% of men have verbally abused another driver, compared to 36% of women
  • 84% of men have crashed their vehicle (and men’s were more serious accidents), compared to 77% of women
  • 51% of men have been distracted by billboards while driving, compared to 40% of women
  • 22% of men admitted to using their cell phones without hands-free devices, compared to 15% of women

I’ll do my best to keep you company on your drive every afternoon here on Sunny 95!!

Idol Madness

Wednesday, March 11th, 2009

This is the time I like on American Idol.

The best of the crop duking it out for the title. The early Idol shows are entertaining in a “gong show” sort of way. But now we have the top performers and a New star about to be born!!

This year seems to have a lot of talent including Lil Rounds who can really sing.

My pick for the title is Scott Macintyre. He has overcome physical disabilities and proves he is a very talented musician as well as a solid performer.

Even if he does not win the top prize I can see him having a Daughtry like career with his Idol exposure.

Season 8 of Idol has been very entertaining…I just hope my endorsement of Scott is not a jinx to his chances!!

Spring is on the way…

Tuesday, March 3rd, 2009

This is that wacky time of year in Ohio where we start our day in the single digits and then end them with sunshine and temperatures in the above freezing range!!

We are now just a few weeks away from the official arrival of springtime.I can’t wait to be able to go outside and not have to wear an arsenal of heavy clothing..

The other part of this time of year I love is the start of baseball season.

Spring training is underway and soon our Clippers will be taking up residence in the brand new Huntington park  downtown. I don’t know if you have seen the park yet but it looks gorgeous. This park is as good as any major league stadium.

Summer in Columbus will be so much fun this year with this new gem in the Arena district. It will be so much fun to meet friends before and after the game at some of the restaurants and pubs and enjoy the new ballpark.

Hang in there… the warm weather and springtime is just around the corner!!
